How to Become a Polygot

According to Dictionary.com polyglot is simply “a person who speaks, writes, or reads a number of languages.” The United States is one of the largest monolingual areas on Earth. In many countries in Asia and some parts of Africa, most people can speak 3 or 4 languages already since their childhood. So, being a polyglot is not uncommon. Anybody can become a polyglot.
A hyperpolyglot is a person that speaks more than 12 languages. While being a hyperpolyglot is not very common, there are more than you may think. These people are not super humans or something like that. They have just made a decision to learn a language and they are using the most effective language learning techniques. Language learning is easy if you are using the right techniques.
1. Define Your Why
Language learning is 80% psychology and only 20% technique. You need to want really want it. Getting the right mindset will make your language learning process much easier and more enjoyable.
Define your Whys. Do you need it for a new job? Do you need it so you can communicate better with your wife or with your in-laws? What is your why? It’s always better if you write down those goals to the paper. Then they sink deeper into your mind, and you can also see that paper if you feel discouraged during the learning process. Define your why and you are already halfway becoming a polyglot.
2. Make a Little Progress Every Day
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Learning a new language requires consistency and persistence. A little progress every day adds up to significant results. Even 30 or 15 minutes a day can make enormous progress if you keep on practicing every day.
3. Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes
If you want to learn a new language, you need to be ready to go out of your comfort zone. Sometimes you will make mistakes, but that’s ok.
4. Find a Language Partner
Find a native speaker and practice with him/her. Nowadays you can find native speakers for any language in 5 minutes in Italki. Having a language partner will help you hugely in the process of becoming a polyglot.
